Tiburon council reappoints incumbents, appoints Teresa Coleman to diversity task force and extends application window for one seat

Teresa Coleman, who introduced herself as a longtime Tiburon resident and a filmmaker and realtor, was nominated for the Diversity, Inclusion Task Force. Coleman told the council she could help produce and promote town events, film short pieces for the town website and assist outreach to younger participants. Later the council debated whether to appoint Andrew Soares — an applicant who expressed interest in the Planning Commission and Parks/Open Space Commission during the interview period — or to reopen POST’s application window after the clerk advised a late application had arrived over the weekend. After discussion about fairness to late applicants versus the desire to move forward with a candidate present at the meeting, the council voted to extend the application period for one month to accept additional applicants for the POST vacancy. The motion to extend the period passed on roll call, 3–2.

Mayor Wellner summarized next steps after the vote: staff and the clerk will reopen the recruitment and return with a schedule for interviews and appointment decisions. Council members also encouraged tonight’s applicants to remain engaged if not appointed immediately.

A separate public comment earlier in the meeting drew attention: Carter Smith, a Redwood High School freshman, asked the council to place a junior council member proposal on a future agenda. Smith recommended a one‑year youth representative program modeled on neighboring jurisdictions to give students a formal advisory role and promote youth civic engagement; the mayor thanked him and noted staff will consider adding the item to an upcoming agenda.

The council adjourned to closed session at the end of the meeting and reconvened with no reportable action.
