Wilson County officials say recent IT fraud prompted tighter rules for asset disposals

During the meeting, county staff described measures taken after an instance of fraud in the IT department to strengthen internal controls over fixed assets and disposals.
A staff member said the county revised forms and workflows so asset disposals are now routed through the budget committee for final authority, rather than being handled locally. "What we've learned in the process is our controls over disposals probably...lack something to be desired," the staff member said, noting they had changed forms and increased oversight.
Commissioners said the road department's disposals still come to this board, but the new countywide practice shifts responsibility for most disposal approvals to the budget committee. The county attorney and staff said they have discussed the changes and will continue to coordinate to ensure proper documentation and oversight.
No formal vote was recorded; staff described this as an ongoing administrative correction and coordination between departments.
