Sawyer County communications director: EMPG grant awarded; two dispatchers hired

Sawyer County’s communications director told the Public Safety Committee the county’s EMPG (Emergency Management Performance Grant) application was approved and the county should receive those funds later than in prior years.
"For emergency management, I did submit the EMPG grant, which was approved and awarded by the state. So we should be receiving those funds," the director said.
The director reported staffing changes for the communications center: "We did hire 2 dispatchers full time at the beginning of the month in February, Mikaela Kosterman and Amber Alkom. They started February 8." The communications center still has one full-time vacancy, the director said.
Operational call volumes shared with the committee included about 1,410 CAD calls year-to-date for February and 5,444 9-1-1 calls as of Feb. 23 (including non-emergency and emergency calls). The director described borrowing a Douglas County command-post trailer during the Birkebeiner event to reduce radio confusion and support efficient field operations.
The director also said staff will attend a court safety and security conference and assist in joint information system center planning for tribal, state and local public information officers on March 31 in Washburn County.
