A motion to extend the city's paid-leave option under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act through June 30, 2022 passed after discussion. City Manager Johnson described the policy as additional paid time off for employees who must quarantine because they tested positive for COVID-19 or who need to care for an infected family member. "It's our belief that it's in the city's best interest to keep people in those circumstances home and away from the rest of us," Johnson said.
Commissioners discussed whether paid leave should be conditioned on employees being vaccinated; the discussion noted some private employers have linked leave to vaccination status. Johnson said the city did not examine making eligibility conditional on vaccination and that the priority was ensuring sick employees stayed home. Commissioners declined to require vaccination as a condition for paid leave.
A roll-call vote approved the extension. The policy extension was framed as supporting employee and public health while the commission said it would not separate employees by vaccination status.
What happens next: the paid-leave extension is in effect through June 30, 2022; city staff will continue to administer the policy and monitor public-health guidance.
