Cumbie Center seeks awareness ribbons and a resident urges a roller-skating rink

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, April Jordan asked the council for permission to display awareness ribbons and attach informational cards along Georgia Avenue during sexual assault awareness month in April and domestic violence awareness month in October. Jordan said the Cumbie Center — which she said is a nonprofit that serves victims of domestic violence and sexual assault — provides a 24/7 hotline and confidential services including counseling, crisis intervention and a safe house.
“We like to put these awareness ribbons up and down Georgia Avenue during the month of April ... these are just information cards that has our phone number, our 24/7 phone number,” Jordan said, describing outreach activities and a community bake-off planned for March 28.
Joanie Williford, a resident of 814 Hillside Drive and a long-time community member, told the council she would like to see an indoor roller-skating rink in North Augusta. Williford recounted local skating venues from her youth and said an indoor rink could operate year-round and provide family-oriented recreation and a possible revenue stream for the city.
Council members thanked both speakers and said they would investigate the roller-rink idea and accommodate the Cumbie Center’s outreach plans as usual.
