Supervisors adopt updated insurance requirements for county vendors and contractors

Chickasaw County supervisors discussed and approved updated insurance requirements for vendors and general contractors on March 2, following a staff recommendation that the county align vendor insurance limits with the county’s risk-pool advisor.
Chair introduced the item and noted the change would apply to contracts going forward, including work at the new engineer’s office. Board members raised concerns the recommended limits could be high for small, individual contractors who may need to contact their insurers to obtain higher coverages. A staff participant said larger paving and infrastructure contractors typically meet the limits without issue.
A motion by Travis, second by Steve, adopted the recommended insurance minimums and clarified the requirement would apply to new contracts and vendor engagements moving forward. The board asked staff to communicate the new requirements to contractors and to consider training or clarity guidance for county employees about what information is confidential and what contractors must provide.
The change is intended to manage county risk on public-construction projects while offering staff discretion to clarify implementation for smaller vendors.
