Garden Grove council directs staff to study commemorative 'Freedom Way' signage for Trailer Way; petition process and wind‑load checks ordered

The Garden Grove City Council on Feb. 24 instructed staff to study options for commemorative signage on Trailer Way and related city-owned alleys and to return with findings on petition results and engineering feasibility.
City staff presented maps and exhibits showing Trailer Way, south of the 22 Freeway and intersecting Brookhurst, and noted that a formal renaming would affect approximately 32 residential properties. As an alternative to formally changing addresses, staff proposed adding secondary signage or a plaque above an existing street sign (illustrated examples included "Freedom Way," "Trudeau," and "Libertad") or considering renaming a city-owned alley (no resident addresses affected).
The staff presentation described the first steps in the process: direction from council to proceed; staff would then circulate a petition to directly affected residents seeking a majority showing of support and pursue a planning commission resolution if the petition succeeds. Staff also flagged engineering considerations for public works (notably sign-arm wind-load capacity) if additional plaque signage is added.
Councilmember Jo Vin asked that any added signage include diacritical marks and be sized and engineered appropriately to withstand wind loads; she asked staff to move quickly and, if possible, to have signage in place by April for related community observances. The council then moved, seconded and approved the staff study/direction motion by a 7–0 roll-call vote.
Staff will return with the results of resident petitioning, public‑works engineering analysis and recommendations for final council action.
