The Georgia Forestry Commission and Georgia Tech outlined a joint $10.9 million request to develop pilot facilities and a business-innovation hub aimed at producing high-value products from wood residuals. Johnny Sabo of the Georgia Forestry Commission described mass-timber and Georgia Grown Wood initiatives as strategies to expand markets for sawmills and small-diameter wood, and said seed funding would help attract industry partners.
Carson Meredith of Georgia Tech’s Renewable Bioproducts Institute explained the technical and market case for two product lines — conversion-grade carbon products (a form of biochar engineered for chemical feedstocks) and specialty solvents for pharmaceuticals and coatings — and described pilot plants designed to produce roughly 30–40 pounds per day as proof-of-concept facilities. "The pilot plant ... produces something from 30 to 40 pounds per day," Meredith said, adding that the business hub would train workers and help de-risk investment for larger commercial plants.
Presenters and lawmakers discussed feedstock choice and federal policy constraints. Meredith said pilots would start with woodchips and that carbonization in the process both dries and converts the material. Several senators raised federal renewable-fuel rules that can limit uses of small-diameter wood for aviation fuel and similar products; presenters said federal recognition of timber as a renewable resource would broaden market opportunities.
Committee members queried siting, logistics and economics: pilots should be located near chip sources to limit transport costs, and presenters estimated a minimum target purchase price of about $30 per ton for chips to make longer-term plants viable. Meredith and Sabo emphasized that the pilot stage is necessary for investors to see reliable yields and cost models before scaling.
The committee did not reach a final funding decision in the recorded segments; presenters offered to provide additional breakdowns of pilot siting, staffing and the full $10.9 million budget.
