Residents press Cary council for outside forensic audit amid spending questions

Several Cary residents used the Public Speaks Out period at the Dec. 11 Cary Town Council meeting to demand accountability and for the council to commission an outside forensic audit.
"The citizens of Cary cannot trust their council," said Renee Miller, who urged a full forensic audit of the town's books and records and said recent press reports raised questions including that the town manager had been placed on leave and that a council member received reimbursements the speaker said were ineligible. "Citizens should not settle for less," Miller said.
Other residents echoed calls for transparency and action. Sally Spencer recalled public opposition to a previous Waverly rezoning and said she learned a District C representative had indicated the council had decided votes in advance; she also told the council she had concerns about town‑funded payments for a council member's MBA. Marjorie Eastman said she was receiving messages from residents across the political spectrum urging integrity and accountability; Rebecca Lancer said she feared there may be additional undisclosed issues and urged the council to "do the right thing."
Clerk Virginia Johnson read two written comments into the record: one from Jordan Odle expressing support for Town Manager Sean Stegall and thanks to public safety, and one from Greg Naclero calling for greater transparency, an independent audit and consideration of term limits.
No formal council action on an audit was taken at the meeting; council members invited public comment but did not announce a plan to commission an outside forensic audit during the session.
