Summary
The Shakopee Planning Commission voted to recommend City Council approve an interim use permit allowing a temporary 14-by-70 construction trailer to be placed at 1099 Adams Street South to house firefighters during renovation of Fire Station No. 2; staff said the trailer would be removed by Nov. 30, 2026.
The Shakopee Planning Commission voted March 5 to recommend that the City Council approve an interim use permit to place a temporary 14-by-70 construction trailer at 1099 Adams Street South in Lyons Park to support Fire Station No. 2 during renovation.
City planning staff member Mr. Kirske summarized the request, saying the trailer would be located adjacent to the fire station "to provide support facilities for fire staff to maintain 24 hour response capabilities during the renovation of Fire Station Number 2." He said the unit would include a restroom, meeting space and three sleeping rooms and would be sited outside of pavement areas to allow access to the garage. Staff recommended approval to the City Council via Resolution R2026-37.
The staff presentation noted a neighborhood meeting on Feb. 23 drew no attendees and that the trailer would be removed on or before Nov. 30, 2026. Mr. Kirske said the proposed use is temporary, would not delay permanent development or conflict with the comprehensive plan, and would not impose additional public costs.
Commissioners asked whether a different trailer already on site was part of this request; staff clarified that an unrelated trailer was serving nearby roundabout construction and did not require an interim use permit. With no members of the public speaking on the item, a motion to recommend approval was made and seconded. The commission then approved the recommendation by roll call: Commissioners Weiler, Sandhu, Redding, Charis, Vander Veil and Robbins voted in favor.
The recommendation will go to the Shakopee City Council for final action under Resolution R2026-37. The commission’s action is advisory; any conditions or final permit terms will be set by the council.
