Council approves project‑graduation support, considers several nonprofit and chamber requests

At the March 11 meeting the council considered multiple community support requests and took votes on a few items.
Project Graduation: Tazewell High School seniors requested waiver of Lincolnshire Park rental fees and monetary support for Project Graduation. Abigail Rudy, a senior representing the class, described the event and asked the council to waive the fee so funds could instead go to food and activities. Councilors moved, amended and approved providing support and waiving rental fees; the motion and amendment were approved by voice vote.
Friends of Southwest Virginia: A representative of Friends of Southwest Virginia described river cleanup, habitat stabilization and education work in the Clinch River watershed and asked for continued local support. Staff noted the town previously allocated $1,500 in support and recommended placing the request in the FY2026 budget donations line so it can be considered along with other requests.
Chamber sponsorship: The Tazewell County Chamber asked for continued sponsorship of Octoberfest and related events; council moved and voted to provide a $500 sponsorship for the chamber’s annual fundraiser.
Other requests discussed included potential riverwalk coordination with watershed groups, and staff said they would evaluate donation requests against remaining budget slack or year‑end balances and the town’s grant planning timetable.
