Assistant City Manager Dina Drongo said the city will apply to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for a Community Forestry grant to support tree maintenance, including structural pruning and hazard reduction on public trees in targeted corridors and parks.
Drongo said the maximum grant request is $75,000 and the program requires a 25% local match; staff told commissioners the match is available in the budget. The project streets and a project map are in the packet, but Drongo warned that the map may be difficult to read in black‑and‑white copies. The application deadline is Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m.; the packet was intentionally incomplete because staff requested the commission’s permission to pursue the grant while the application is finalized.
Commissioners asked how tree maintenance has been handled historically; staff replied the city has used a combination of staff work and contractors and that grant funds would supplement general fund dollars rather than replace them. The commission indicated support for pursuing the opportunity.
