Silver Lakes Middle School students observe commission workshop, ask about nearby roadway work

Students in a civics research class from Silver Lakes Middle School attended the City of North Lauderdale workshop on Feb. 23 to observe local government in action.
Miss Olsima, a social-studies teacher, told the commission that her class is using project-based learning to apply civics lessons. She thanked the commission for allowing students to attend and to see public policy and procedure firsthand.
During a brief question-and-answer, a seventh grader who identified herself as Violet asked why the city planned to raise a roadway by six inches near the school. City staff deferred the technical explanation to the project consultant and said the engineering team will provide visuals and a written explanation for students and the commission.
At the end of the visit commissioners invited students to pose for photos with elected officials and encouraged them to consider careers in local government. The commission adjourned at about 10:59 a.m.; staff announced the next public meeting for Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m.
