Commission reviewed sign-waiver for Advance Auto Parts as city updates site code

City of North Lauderdale staff told commissioners at a Feb. 23 workshop that a signed-waiver request from Advance Auto Parts would be presented for formal consideration at the next meeting.
The waiver concerns sign height for a parcel adjacent to a McDonald’s and a Teleperformance development. City staff noted a typographical error in the packet: the chart on page 3 lists the waiver height as “2” when the waiver requested 80 inches. Staff also said the city code currently permits 16 inches for the relevant sign type while the plan-zone allowance would be 24 inches.
Why it matters: the commission is updating site codes that could change permitted sign dimensions. Staff told the commission that Advance Auto Parts chose to apply under current rules rather than wait for the code update, and that McDonald’s on the same plaza already has a larger sign.
Staff said two consultants to work on the code updates are expected to appear on the agenda next month; if commissioners authorize the contracts the consultants would begin public outreach and stakeholder meetings to inform a revised code.
City Clerk Slattery flagged the packet error and asked staff to correct it before the waiver returns to the commission. Beyond correcting the waiver memo, staff committed to provide the commissioners with the site plan and any visual exhibits requested ahead of the formal agenda item so members can review dimensions and context prior to a vote.
Next step: staff will place the corrected waiver and consultant agreements on a future agenda and begin public outreach if commissioners authorize the firms.
