Mayor Borglien seeks $10,000 commissioner initiative funds, asks city attorney to draft ordinance

At the Feb. 10 City of North Lauderdale workshop, Mayor Borglien proposed establishing a community-initiative fund allotting $10,000 annually to each commissioner and $15,000 to the mayor to support events, partnerships and community initiatives.
Borglien said the funds could be used to fund city staff participation, police or fire presence at events and partnership work with civic organizations, but would be "strictly prohibited from being used for any advocacy, political activity." He also proposed that commissioners be allowed to organize two city events annually and the mayor three, with promotional materials required to feature all five commissioners and the mayor.
The mayor asked the city attorney to draft an ordinance to present by the first meeting in March, effective for fiscal year 2026-27. City Attorney Pammy suggested the fund might be better established by resolution for flexibility, while City Manager Sargent noted staff could make it effective for the remainder of the fiscal year if the commission wanted immediate application. Commissioners indicated consensus on the direction and asked staff to prepare the draft language for formal consideration.
The commission did not adopt any ordinance during the workshop; the matter was directed to staff and legal for drafting.
