Commission gives consensus to enforce attendance penalties in municipal code

At the Feb. 10 City of North Lauderdale commission workshop, Mayor Borglien asked the commission for consensus to begin enforcing an existing attendance provision in the municipal code.
Borglien read the code language describing administrative review and a possible salary deduction for unexcused absences and sought the commission's agreement to enforce it. The code language read into the record says the governing body may move to deduct "$200 for a member's unexcused absence from a regular meeting and the sum of $100 for a special meeting." Borglien said the code already authorizes the deduction mechanism; he asked the commission for a consensus to implement enforcement.
Commission members responded in the affirmative during the workshop. No formal motion or roll-call vote was held at the workshop; the mayor characterized the direction as consensus to enforce the existing code provision and tasked staff with carrying out the administrative steps spelled out in the code.
The commission did not announce any immediate individual penalties at the workshop; any enforcement actions would follow the process set out in the municipal code and require administrative steps and recordkeeping by the clerk and finance director.
