CIDC votes to reserve 21 acres in Conroe Technology Park for future economic initiative

The Conroe Industrial Development Corporation voted to reserve roughly 21 acres inside the inner loop of the Conroe Technology Park and an additional roughly 20 adjacent acres for a future economic initiative, a board presenter said at the Jan. 20 meeting.
Miss McKeska, who presented the proposal, told the board the parcel would serve as protected green space or be available for future park or entertainment uses such as a theater or discovery-green–type facility. “To not reserve that green space for a future going forward, to me, would be a real tragedy,” she said, urging the board to protect the land now so it remains available decades from now.
The request covered the remainder of the inner loop (about 21 acres) and additional outside acreage. McKeska said the measure would only reserve the land; the board could rescind the reservation if a major economic opportunity — Amazon or another large tenant — came forward. She also said board members and staff will take a site tour in the near future.
Board members voiced support for the concept and emphasized stewardship and long-term vision. One member praised the site’s beauty and nearby residential growth and said reserving the land is a low-cost way to promote a different pattern of development. Another member used a metaphor, calling the parcel “a gold coin in your pocket” that the city should hold for future opportunity. The chair said the location is ideal to serve the whole city and called the move a wise investment for Conroe.
A board member moved to reserve the acreage, another seconded, and the motion carried on a voice vote. The resolution as approved directs staff to reserve the specified acreage; McKeska and staff said they will follow up with site visits and planning discussion.
The board discussed phasing and low-cost initial improvements such as clearing and informal parking to make the area usable while preserving green space. McKeska reiterated the reservation is conceptual and intended to preserve options for future development.
The board adjourned at 5:06 p.m. after also approving other routine business; members said a CIDC workshop will be scheduled to further define strategy and near-term objectives.
