Lee County Commission approves leases, plats, budget amendment and a federal-aid resurfacing agreement

The Lee County Commission took multiple routine and project votes during its Jan. 26 meeting, approving contracts and land-use items that advance county services and roadwork.
The commission approved the consent agenda, which included minutes, claims, procurement card transactions and an announcement of an opening on the Smith Station Fire Protection District Board. The chair called for the vote and members voiced "Aye." (Move made from the dais.)
Under old business the commission approved the preliminary plat for Magnolia Estates in Commission District 5, a plat carried over from a prior meeting. Mr. Hardy summarized the proposal, which would add approximately 0.69 miles of new roads, and commissioners voted to carry the measure forward.
In new business the commission approved a one-day special events ABC license for Premium Pours at 1847 Springbilla Road after a standard staff presentation. Sheriff Jay Jones presented the request.
The commission also approved a proposed 30-year lease to secure land for a Smith Station annex to provide county services locally. Blake Beck (identified in the meeting as the county's new COO) described the lease as the first step toward building an annex and requested approval; the motion passed on a voice vote.
A parks budget amendment (roughly $105,000) to buy equipment for county parks was presented; the commission approved the amendment after a motion and second, though one commissioner registered opposition during the vote.
Final plats for Morales Subdivision (three lots, Commission District 4) and Sweet Home Estates Phase 1 (four lots) were approved after staff presentations and motions.
For transportation, Mr. Hardy presented a federal-aid funding agreement for resurfacing about 1.8 miles of Lee Road 427 (Pierce Road) in Commission District 3. The agreement uses federal funds via the Columbus-Phoenix City MPO on an 80/20 match. The estimated total project cost in the packet was $993,600, with the county's 20% match approximately $198,720; ALDOT will manage letting, and bids will return to the commission for final award.
The meeting concluded with an adjournment vote.
