Commissioners approve $20,000 state grant for veterans services

Veterans Service Officer Robert Boyette told commissioners the state approved a $20,000 grant to support veterans in Johnston County and asked that the board revise the operating budget to include the new funds. He described planned uses including software to support remote signatures, telehealth support to reduce veterans' travel to VA facilities, staff training and accreditation, monthly veterans workshops, office furnishings to accommodate veterans with disabilities, and community outreach and informational packets.
"I'm requesting a budget revision to incorporate the grant funds into our current operating budget," Boyette said, and he invited questions. A commissioner confirmed the funds must be spent within the categories approved by the state; Boyette said that is correct. A motion to approve the budget revision passed by voice vote.
The board thanked Boyette for pursuing the grant.
