Board approves multiple facilities projects, bids and schedule changes including $146,347.80 switchgear bid

At its March 2 meeting the Wayne County Board of Education approved several facilities, procurement and finance items that the facilities and finance committees had recommended.
Miss Roberts presented the annual audit contract for fiscal year 2526, saying the contract amount cannot exceed $45,000 and will be submitted to the Local Government Commission by Dec. 31, 2026. The board approved that contract.
Under finance items the board accepted nine reported donations with a monetary value of $2,200 and nonmonetary value of $6,450, bringing year‑to‑date monetary donations to $65,283.13 and nonmonetary to $30,274.10.
The facilities committee listed recommended projects including a two‑year power purchase agreement with Duke Energy for Grantham Middle, purchase orders for kitchen equipment and two 72‑passenger buses using state funds, a breezeway connector at Eastern Wayne High using capital small projects funding and a $15,000 Terracon change order for construction testing at Rosewood Middle. The board approved the Terracon change order (recorded in the meeting as 4–1).
On East Wayne High School’s switchgear replacement, staff said East Coast Power submitted the low bid at $146,347.80. Doctor Hills told the board the project has been on the capital small projects list since 2022 and that installation next summer could require up to two weeks without power at the main campus during tie‑in. The board approved awarding the bid to East Coast Power; the item will proceed under capital small projects funding.
The board approved paving option 2 for Rosewood Middle (removing and replacing medium‑duty asphalt), and accepted Daniels and Daniels as the low bidder for the Rosewood Elementary addition at $4,581,000 (with two alternates at $102,000 and $800 reported as low alternates); the contract will be brought back next month for formal execution.
The board also approved adjusted start and dismissal times for nontraditional schools beginning in the 2026–27 school year: Wayne Early Middle College 09:15–03:45; Wayne School of Engineering 09:00–03:30; Wayne School of Technical Arts 08:30–03:30.
Why it matters: the approvals move several capital and maintenance projects into procurement and contracting phases and adjust schedules at specialized schools ahead of next school year. Several items referenced insurance reimbursements and funding sources (capital small projects, state transportation funds) but did not change the district budget in open session.
