County staff and commissioners voice opposition to bill allowing ATVs on county roads

Elmore County officials told commissioners on Feb. 10 that they will monitor the 2025 legislative session and oppose a proposed bill that would permit all-terrain vehicles on county roads.
Chief Engineer Luke McGinty said county staff met the local delegation and will keep close tabs on bills that affect the county. “We’ll keep an eye on a couple bills, related to logging. There’s a bill about ATVs, using county roads, and so we’re opposed opposed to that,” McGinty said.
A commissioner speaking from a law-enforcement perspective said their office is “totally against that” version of the bill, citing crash risks: “If you ever had never been to a 4 wheeler wreck where somebody’s hit one, that’s not a pretty sight,” the commissioner said, adding that allowing ATVs on county roads makes no sense for law enforcement.
McGinty said the sheriff’s association has already voiced concerns and will assist the county’s opposition. No formal county vote on the matter took place at the meeting; officials said county staff and engineering will continue to track and communicate with the delegation as the session progresses.
The discussion took place during the commission operations report; commissioners did not propose specific county-level regulatory actions at the Feb. 10 meeting.
