Elmore County approves land transfer with state, citing options for transfer station and disaster debris staging

Elmore County commissioners on Jan. 27 authorized the chairman to accept a land transfer from the Alabama Department of Corrections (as described in the meeting) that will convey property east of Tutwiler on Highway 231 to both Elmore County and the City of Wetumpka.
Chief engineer Luke McGinty said the joint transfer creates future options, including the possibility that the county’s solid-waste contractor could use the site as a transfer station, and that the parcel’s proximity to a humane shelter on Highway 9 could ease future expansion. He also said the county could partner with the city to stage vegetative debris at a closed landfill after a disaster.
The transfer was described as an enabling step to expand future county and municipal options rather than as an immediate plan to build a transfer station or other facility. Commissioners voted to authorize the chairman to execute the transfer by unanimous roll call.
