Elmore County commissioners on Jan. 27 approved a proclamation recognizing Human Trafficking Prevention Month following a presentation by Michelle Wood, identified in the meeting as the county’s Department of Human Resources director.
Wood reviewed the importance of community partnerships to prevent, recognize and respond to trafficking. She said that since passage of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act nearly 25 years ago, “an estimated 27,600,000 people have been subjected to human trafficking globally,” noting that trafficking occurs in every U.S. state and territory, including Alabama. She urged residents to learn the signs and to use the national human trafficking hotline to report concerns.
Commissioners thanked Wood and her staff and approved the proclamation by unanimous roll call. The proclamation is intended as a public-awareness measure to encourage local prevention efforts and to direct residents to reporting resources.
