The Arts & Culture Advisory Commission on Jan. 7 moved to narrow the criteria it will recommend to the City Council for filling open commissioner seats, focusing on experience in arts and culture, cultural understanding, collaboration and commitment to engagement.
Staff framed the effort as a way to "maintain a balanced, engaged, and skilled commission" and to provide greater transparency about why candidates are selected or not, staff said. Commissioners spent the meeting prioritizing five broad areas — experience/background, cultural understanding and vision, community engagement, collaboration/team fit and commitment — and discussed which interview questions would best test each area.
Commissioners debated what ‘‘culture’’ means for Surprise and how to craft a short, searchable heading for criteria while reserving more detailed follow-up questions for application forms or interviews. One commissioner said the group should allow applicants who are new to Surprise to explain how their prior experience would translate, while others emphasized asking candidates how they would support or influence cultural growth in the city.
The commission agreed to "take a scalpel" to the long list of possible questions, selecting the strongest question in each category for interviews and reserving additional items for application responses if needed. Commissioners also proposed a small subgroup or representative to finalize the proposal for presentation to City Council and to coordinate scheduling with council members.
Next steps: commissioners will refine a shorter set of interview questions and a recommended criteria summary to present to the council; timing and a lead presenter were discussed and will be coordinated in follow-up meetings.
