Music Commission lays out 2026 priorities: outreach, preservation markers, transit and support for production workers

The Austin Music Commission used part of its December 1 meeting to begin shaping its strategic priorities for 2026, reading a draft list of goals and inviting commissioner input on outreach, preservation and workforce support.
The chair read a series of proposed goals focusing on sustaining and growing the city's music ecosystem through grant refinement, enhanced outreach, creative-district tools, and partnerships. The proposal included a new collaboration with Preservation Austin to "create markers in 10 council districts to highlight the broad and significant music history in Austin," a measure intended to raise visibility for music history across all council districts.
Commissioner Blevins urged the commission to prioritize transportation subsidies for music-industry workers facing surge pricing when traveling home after downtown shifts. "If you are going to focus on discounted or free transportation, that's the first group that I would go for," Blevins said, arguing that exempting music workers from surge pricing should be an early focus.
Commissioner England (Englund) pressed for attention to production workers and visual artists who often fall between music and arts grant categories. England recommended reviewing data from the current grant cycle to identify gaps in eligibility and ensure production and visual artists are counted in future program design.
Commissioner Cardenas emphasized spotlighting independent venues and emerging artists and urged the commission to develop platforms and outreach plans to increase their visibility.
The chair asked commissioners to continue feedback through January and said she would circulate the written draft and incorporate new suggestions. The commission did not adopt a final strategic plan at this meeting; members agreed to revisit the draft in the next session and to coordinate with ACME staff and other boards as appropriate.
