Angela Ehlers, speaking during public comment, told the Senate Taxation Committee that the Department of Revenue maintains an 'Explain My Property Taxes' web portal that allows users to enter county, city and school district to see how assessed values and each line item contribute to a tax bill. "The Department of Revenue has a website. Part of their portion is called explain my property taxes," she said, describing how the tool breaks down assessed value and shows amounts for school funds, opt-outs and other minor categories.
Ehlers said the portal can be used to model different assessed values and to view the effect of opt-outs and other line items. She urged committee members to publicize the portal as an immediate, uniform resource taxpayers can use instead of requiring a large statutory or printing change. Committee members reacted positively and asked staff to compile resources for public outreach.
Ehlers identified herself as representing South Dakota's conservation districts and said she also spoke as a resident. The committee asked staff to assemble the resources discussed and to return with options for publicizing the Department of Revenue tool and other educational materials.
