Council considered Resolution 26‑02 on March 3 to amend the city’s policy and procedures manual to include automatic enrollment in a 2% Utah Retirement Systems (URS) 457 savings plan for new hires. Cherie (staff) explained the change would allow the city to withhold 2% of a new employee’s paycheck and place it in a 457 plan starting April 1; employees would receive a packet before their hire and could opt out or change participation through the URS website.
Cherie said the program is designed to increase employee participation in retirement savings; she noted that currently only a minority of eligible employees participate in retirement savings options. Staff said there is no cost to the city and no automatic city contribution; the program simplifies enrollment for employees who wish to save.
A councilmember moved and the council approved the amendment. The council completed a roll call vote and the mayor announced the measure passed unanimously. No additional changes to city contributions were proposed.
