Council proclaims tribute to Geraldine “Jerry” Griego; family thanks city

The Albuquerque City Council opened its Jan. 5 session by approving a proclamation honoring Geraldine “Jerry” Griego for decades of neighborhood advocacy in the McKinley area.
Councilor Piedelkorn read the proclamation, detailing Griego’s work on Grisham Park, Montgomery Pool and improvements to pedestrian lighting and intersection safety on Candelaria and Montclair. Piedelkorn said the council “honors the memory and legacy of Jerri Griego for her decades of dedicated service to the McKinley neighborhood and the city of Albuquerque.”
Frank Rego, Griego’s son, accepted the proclamation and thanked the council and community partners. He told the council his mother “loved this city” and described her long involvement with the McKinley Neighborhood Association and neighborhood beautification programs. He also named family members present and thanked local officials and community partners who helped secure the recognition.
Councilors offered brief remarks of sympathy and appreciation before moving on to committee business. The proclamation does not create any legal obligations; it is a ceremonial recognition of Griego’s public service to her neighborhood and the city.
The city clerk will include the signed proclamation in the council’s records and the council noted the family’s request to preserve Griego’s community legacy in future neighborhood work.
