City staff briefed the Historic Landmark Commission on an equity‑based preservation summit held Nov. 21 that convened roughly 50 participants to accelerate implementation of the city’s 10‑year plan.
Kara Bertrand, Historic Preservation Office, said the summit was intended to "update key stakeholders on implementation to date and lay the groundwork for collaboration." She noted the plan’s scale — 14 goals and 107 recommendations — and said staff focused on near‑term, implementable items for the coming year.
Annie Flom, also of the Historic Preservation Office, described the summit structure: organizers used 18 posters tied to five impact areas (keeping residents and businesses in place; improving processes; providing more resources; raising preservation visibility; telling Austin’s full story), collected written feedback on each recommendation and then split attendees into five breakout groups to discuss partnership and resource needs.
Staff said they transcribed and are posting input from the poster sessions, are following up with invitees and will incorporate summit feedback into work plans for near‑term recommendations. Bertrand said follow‑up will include continued outreach to partner organizations and revisiting staff work plans.
Commissioners welcomed the briefing and encouraged colleagues to attend future summits. The commission discussed using the event annually to maintain momentum and to strengthen cross‑departmental implementation amid constrained budgets.
