Commission delegates signature authority for opioid settlement agreements to chair

Roosevelt County commissioners approved a motion to delegate signature authority for opioid litigation and settlement documents to the commission chair.
County attorney briefed the board that multiple multi-jurisdictional civil lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and distributors are producing nationwide settlement funds that counties may receive. He explained that settlement money is intended for opioid-related remediation—treatment, rehabilitation, prevention and behavioral-health programs—and that multiple deadlines for signature exist in September and October. Because the county manager position is in flux, counsel recommended the delegation be made to the chair to ensure the county can timely accept settlements. Commissioners asked for examples and noted Purdue as one defendant among many cited during the briefing. The motion to delegate signature authority carried unanimously; counsel said staff will memorialize the delegation in the minutes and can draft a resolution later if the commission prefers formal delegation language.
