Roosevelt County Commission approves calendar, enters MOU for courthouse security and advances routine business

The Roosevelt County Commission handled a series of routine and policy items, approving the county calendar for 2026, endorsing legislative priorities, renewing a housing contract with Colfax County and approving a memorandum of understanding to reimburse the county for courthouse security personnel.
The commission voted unanimously to adopt a set of top legislative priorities for 2026 (roads equipment, fairgrounds master plan, detention center upgrades, emergency warning system and related capital items) and approved Resolution 2025‑38 supporting the New Mexico Counties legislative platform. Commissioners also approved the 2026 calendar after adjusting a February meeting date and moving the December payday to Dec. 24 to address banking timing concerns.
In operational business, detention leadership presented a renewed contract with Colfax County to house inmates; the commission approved the renewal. County staff presented indigent claims totaling $16,479.57 and the commission approved five claims and disapproved five based on Medicaid status or application issues. The commission appointed Miss Forger as the county’s voting member to the New Mexico Counties Insurance Authority (NMCIA).
The commission considered and approved a modified memorandum of understanding with the Ninth Judicial District Court to reimburse Roosevelt County for courthouse security personnel. County staff explained a prorated correction to the reimbursement amount and said the funded position would operate on a rotating schedule to avoid burnout; the commission approved the MOU by voice vote.
Commissioners discussed whether to hire a tax attorney to pursue gross receipts tax from activity at the Melrose Air Force Range. County counsel and staff reported partial progress and asked for another month to research options with the Taxation and Revenue Department; commissioners agreed to give staff time and to explore coordination with neighboring Curry County before contracting outside counsel.
A public election recount and recheck was scheduled to take place in the same room immediately after the meeting; county staff confirmed it would be open to the public.
