Orange County adopts sheriff and DA military‑equipment policies after public objection

A resident urged the board to reject the sheriff’s proposed inventory, saying it included additional drones, hundreds of rifles, launchers and an armored vehicle and expressing concern about use of indiscriminate munitions. Supervisor Sarmiento said he would dissent on the adoption for reasons he previously raised, including supplier‑related national security questions about some drone manufacturers.
County counsel explained the board’s role is to approve use policies that govern how and under what rules the agencies may employ such equipment; supervisors emphasized that any use must comply with state and federal law. Commander Jasper of the Sheriff’s Office described current practices and legal compliance.
After discussion, the board voted to adopt the policies, with a 4–1 tally. Supervisors said they expect agencies to follow the policies and to return for any future changes required by law or new procurement.
