The board recognized Margaret Collins’s selection to the U.S. Senate Youth Program, heard a letter read by Gabriela Pena and received student advisor Josiah Estrada’s report on student council achievements, campus concerns and upcoming events.
Las Cruces Public Schools recognized student leadership and heard a multi-topic student advisory update at the Feb. 17 board meeting.
Marissa Prentiss, coordinator of activities, introduced Margaret Collins, a Las Cruces High School senior chosen as one of New Mexico’s delegates to the 64th annual U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington, D.C.; Prentiss said Collins will receive a $10,000 scholarship for undergraduate study. The board congratulated Collins and invited photos.
Centennial senior Gabriela (Gabby) Pena read a letter from an elementary-school pen pal as part of a joint Orff ensemble project that combined elementary and high-school students in collaborative performances.
Student advisor Josiah Estrada (senior at Maple High School) reported on student councils’ recent successes, noted upcoming events (Oregon Mountain hosting Special Olympics activities and a Best Buddy walk), raised concerns about PA-system issues and campus wayfinding at Arrowhead Park, and asked the superintendent to attend a future student meeting to discuss NMAA transfer rules and potential impacts on redistricting. Board members thanked Josiah for the report and asked the student to share event dates with the board.
The recognitions and student report highlighted district extracurricular achievements and flagged student concerns that the board and staff may follow up on.
