Board recognizes National Weights and Measures Week and spotlights county enforcement work

At the start of the Feb. 24 meeting, Chair Doug Chaffee and Vice Chair Katrina Foley invited Jose Arriaga, Orange County Sealer of Weights and Measures, and his staff to the dais to mark National Weights and Measures Week.
Arriaga described the office’s role inspecting and testing thousands of devices—gas pumps, retail scales, water submeters and electric watt meters—and conducting secret‑shop price checks to ensure advertised shelf prices match point‑of‑sale charges. He emphasized the office’s consumer protection mandate and noted Orange County’s scale: tens of thousands of devices and millions of resident and visitor transactions rely on accurate measuring and pricing.
"We are protecting an $89,000,000,000 retail economy," Arriaga told the board, and he encouraged residents to report suspected inaccuracies to the office.
Chair Chaffee and Vice Chair Foley thanked the weights and measures staff and recognized the day before proceeding to the regular meeting agenda.
