The Katy City Council on Jan. 26 authorized the purchase of a 1.304-acre tract in the Texas Heritage Marketplace from Peterson Road Town Center LLC for up to $227,248 plus closing costs. Staff said the property will host a police substation and an attached single-bay facility to allow future ambulance and fire apparatus; funding will come from general fund reserves.
Staff and council members said the property purchase is an early step: an architect will be selected and the project will proceed through design and subsequent construction phases; staff estimated roughly one year for design and another year for construction once designs are complete.
Council also adopted an ordinance appointing Dana Massey as interim chief of the Katy Fire Department following Chief Parker’s retirement. Colleagues thanked Massey for her long service; when a council member asked if this appointment makes her the first woman to lead the department, the mayor confirmed it does.
Additional votes at the meeting included budget amendment No. 4 for FY25–26 (to account for reserve use and carry-forward projects) and a parking ordinance prohibiting parking on Parkside Street between Cane Island Parkway and Buc-ee’s Boulevard; all motions carried by voice vote.
What comes next: staff will advance design contracts for the public-safety site and proceed with architect selection; the interim chief will lead the department during the transition while staff brings forward any additional personnel or capital requests.
