Council approves Argyle ISD stadium sign package; illuminated press-box logo restricted to events and subject to one-year review

Planning staff presented a request for multiple signs (A1–A4) at the stadium site near US 377 and Canyon Falls Drive. The proposed press-box logo (A3) would be 24 feet tall with an approximate 534-square-foot area, larger than the town’s standard maximum sign area of 300 square feet and greater than typical sign-height allowances. Planning & Zoning recommended partial approval of canopy and wall signs and recommended denying the press-box logo.
The applicant, Braxton Booth, said the sign’s scale was chosen to match similarly sized facilities and noted the sign would be LED-illuminated and typically active only for events. Council members expressed concerns about the sign’s nighttime effect on nearby residents and explored mitigation options, including hours of operation tied to event schedules, a scheduled hard stop (such as 11 p.m.), or an event-based rule (illumination allowed while the field lights are on and turned off at the conclusion of the event).
Councilmember (speaker 15) moved to approve item K3 with the stipulation that illumination of sign A3 be subject to a one-year review and that lighting is only permissible during events and must be turned off at the conclusion of the event. The motion was seconded by Councilmember (speaker 21) and passed by unanimous roll call.
Council directed that the reexamination be limited to illumination parameters (hours/event tie) rather than sign size, enabling the district to avoid redoing sign construction while preserving the council’s ability to revisit lighting concerns if residents raise complaints.
The motion and its conditions reflect a compromise: the town allowed the sign package to proceed while preserving controls over when and how the illuminated sign may be used to mitigate potential nighttime impacts on adjacent neighborhoods.
