Hearing on Subculture coffee and events postponed to March 31 after applicant requests more time

The City Commission on March 9 postponed a quasi‑judicial hearing on whether Subculture, at 302 Northeast 6th Avenue, must provide additional off‑street parking after staff said the business’s activities have shifted toward assembly and events.

Anthea Gianniotis, Development Services Director, summarized code standards and past approvals: the restaurant was approved with 8 on‑site spaces and five in‑lieu spaces; if the use is determined to be an assembly/place of meeting, code would require up to 44 spaces for the 2,205‑square‑foot site. Staff asked the commission to consider whether the manner of use has enlarged beyond the approved restaurant designation.

The applicant (represented by attorney John Clary) asked for a continuance, citing substantial records and the need to prepare; the applicant requested two weeks to a month. Commissioners debated fairness to speakers who had come to testify. Ultimately, the commission approved a motion to continue the hearing and scheduled a special meeting on March 31 at 4:00 p.m. to hear testimony and evidence. Commissioners also cautioned the applicant against online threats and encouraged professional conduct.
