Brookhaven police prepare for FIFA event, launch bilingual Citizens Police Academy

Captain Iona told the council that the Brookhaven Police Department has taken part in critical-incident management training with Chamblee, Doraville and DeKalb emergency services as it prepares for the FIFA event. "We were accompanied by members of the DeKalb Emergency Management Association, DeKalb Fire Rescue, Chamblee PD, as well as Doraville PD," she said, and added that orders for equipment included in the 2026 budget are pending.
Iona also announced the Citizens Police Academy, which will run two concurrent classes, one in English and one in Spanish, beginning in March. She said applicants must either live or work in Brookhaven and must pass a criminal-history check. When asked about teen participation, Iona said 16- and 17-year-olds are too young but that a separate teen camp will be organized for youth engagement this summer.
Councilmembers asked the department for copyable materials they could share with constituents; Iona said staff would provide flyers and age/eligibility details before the regular session.
Next steps: the department will provide outreach materials to councilmembers and continue interagency coordination ahead of the FIFA event.
