County launches fire service strategic planning committee; kickoff tentatively set for Dec. 3

Kenny Dunn, the county executive’s designee on the newly formed Fire Service Strategic Planning Committee, presented an initial status update and timeline to the Public Safety Committee.
"This is our initial report on where our status is," Dunn said, describing the committee’s membership, planned bylaws and tentative schedule. He said the committee includes six county designees (the county executive’s designee is Dunn himself, CFO Dave Del Grande, Assistant General Manager of Land Use Joe Day, Deputy Director of Public Safety Bruce Pinkett and co-chairs Brandon Toole and Kevin Kaneko) and one public member whose applications are under review.
Dunn told the committee he hopes to hold the first meeting on Dec. 3 in the Government Center’s large conference room and sign bylaws and pick co-chairs for the fire service contingent at that kickoff. He said the executive order sets a March deadline for the committee’s initial work but that the county executive may extend that timeline. Early agenda items include procurement, shared software and hardware licensing opportunities, and an initial legal overview from the county attorney on public meeting rules and FOIA requirements.
Dennis Godek, chairman of the Fire and Ambulance Advisory Board, outlined the fire-service-selected members and emphasized cooperation between volunteer fire leadership and county government. He described several leadership appointees by role and background, including representatives from volunteer companies and an EMT/critical care transport leader at A.I. duPont Children’s Hospital.
Council members asked whether meetings would be open to the public and whether the committee would advertise; Dunn confirmed meetings will be public and available virtually as well as in person. Dunn also said the committee will use the FASTUS report as a template and that consultants who produced that regional analysis are monitoring the county’s progress.
Councilman Cartier called the committee "long overdue," and other council members commended staff and volunteer leaders for the work to date. Committee members will return with bylaws, a public member appointment and future meeting dates as the group ramps up operations.
