Southampton supervisors vote to hold public hearing on restricting through-truck traffic on Trinity Church Road

Residents and supervisors described 18-wheelers cutting through a sharp curve near 26609 Trinity Church Road, with trucks reportedly driving into ditches to avoid vehicles entering driveways. "They come up on it unexpectedly," one supervisor said, describing drivers unable to see vehicles around the curve.
County staff told the board that a formal request to VDOT would require holding a public hearing and advertising the request; the board moved and approved placing the matter on the November agenda so that staff can prepare a formal request and public notice. One supervisor noted a new trucking terminal at the corner of the road may be increasing cut-through traffic.
The board also directed staff to pass the resident complaints to VDOT for field review ahead of the hearing. No final action on the restriction was taken at the Oct. 22 meeting; the public hearing in November will be the next formal opportunity for comment and a potential referral to VDOT.
Next steps: Staff will prepare notice and documentation for the November meeting; if the board decides to pursue a no-through-truck designation, the county will request VDOT consider the restriction.
