Broadband, business site work and a veterinary clinic: economic development update

Carl Heck, identified as chairman of Franklin-Southampton Economic Development, updated the board on several economic-development efforts on June 25.
"The broadband project is moving along... they are working to connect to the main hub in Roanoke Rapids that will service the south and western parts of the county, whereas the north and eastern part of the counties will get their internet through Suffolk," Heck said, adding that Eric Collins from Charter will present next month.
Heck reported a groundbreaking for a veterinarian clinic and said the project should be complete in about nine months, and that the Beal Farm site application to the Virginia Business Ready Sites program was pending and expected to be announced in the coming weeks. He said the county was working on a purchase-and-sale and a performance agreement with HM4E Incorporated to locate in the Southampton Business Park, and highlighted local firms and recent recognition for small businesses.
The board received the updates and asked staff to continue engagement with Charter and with the Beal Farm site application; no formal votes were taken on the economic-development items at the meeting.
