After a public hearing the Southampton County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted an ordinance granting property-tax exemption to the Virginia Nottoway Indian Circle and Square Foundation for property in Capron used for historical and cultural purposes.
Sheila Elliott, chair of the foundation, said the nonprofit focuses on education and environmental stewardship and operates largely on member funding and grants. Staff reported that the assessed value of the subject parcel is $109,200 and that the assessed annual tax equates to about $775.32. County staff recommended adoption of the attached ordinance under the state code provision cited in the meeting packet.
Several residents spoke in favor of the exemption during the hearing, and the board moved, seconded and approved the exemption by voice vote. The board recorded the action as unanimous.
The board also noted that the organization should verify whether town-level (Capron) tax exemptions are required separately with the incorporated town, as those are separate processes.
