Summary
The board approved reallocating available bond funds to cover a middle-school roof and expand security measures, including cameras and key-card access at several schools; the motion passed 4-0 after an ABSS representative described underbudgeted sites and safety needs.
Alamance County commissioners unanimously approved a request to reallocate available 2018 bond funds to cover a southern middle-school roof shortfall and to fund school safety and security projects across multiple sites.
"We have six sites with no security cameras," said the ABSS representative who addressed the board as Marilyn, asking the commissioners to approve budgets to "make whole the southern middle roof budget" and to fund cameras and key-card access at elementary, middle and high schools. The representative said finance staff had reviewed numbers and were in agreement that reallocation was possible.
Commissioner (speaker 6) moved that the board release the bond funds to the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) for the projects; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote, 4-0.
Commissioners framed the vote as a public-safety priority. One commissioner cited recent incidents of guns found on campus and urged action: "We can't never be careful enough when it comes to stuff like that," the commissioner said. Another commissioner noted some camera systems are "very grainy" and urged upgrades to improve identification.
