Council approves funds for 30-unit Parkside Cottages affordable project and several community appropriations

The Huntsville City Council on Dec. 18 approved a resolution committing HOME Investment Partnership program funds to Parkside Cottages LLC to construct 30 affordable rental units in North Huntsville, contingent upon an allocation of low-income housing tax credits from the Alabama Housing Finance Authority.
Scott Erwin, community development, described the project as a roughly $13,000,000 investment that will create two- and three-bedroom units for working families and will be developed with Neighborhood Concepts as a local nonprofit partner. Erwin said the city issued a local request for proposals this fall to leverage HOME funds and tax credits to expand affordable rental stock.
Councilmember Watkins praised the project as a meaningful step toward adding affordable housing stock in the city's northern neighborhoods. The resolution passed on a motion and voice vote.
Separately, the council approved District 5 council improvement fund appropriations proposed by Councilmember John Meredith, including $22,000 to Oakwood University for academic resources, $5,000 to Kids to Love Foundation to support mental health services at Williams Bridal School, and $5,000 to the National Coalition of 100 Black Women for mentoring programs. Those appropriations were approved on voice vote.
