Commissioner Gray, who made the motion, described the purchase as a modest price to secure land for youth recreation amid rapid population growth. "Even though it's $80,000…it's a huge contribution to the Yulee Sports Complex," Gray said, and noted the county is growing "by leaps and bounds" and needs places for youth sports.
The motion to approve the purchase was seconded and the board approved it by voice vote, recorded by the clerk as 5–0.
Gray said the county plans to highlight the purchase at the Yulee Little League opening day on March 7 and that nearby residents had expressed concern about potential alternative uses for the parcel; he said the board's acquisition should reassure neighbors.
The agenda described the item as approval to proceed to closing pursuant to a real property purchase and sale agreement with the Coalition for the purchase of a vacant parcel at 86067 Pages Dairy (parcel name per agenda) adjacent to the Yulee Sports Complex for the purchase price of $80,000 and authorization for the county manager to sign closing documents.
