Nassau County commissioners elect McCullough chair for 2026; slate of reappointments and committee changes approved

Commissioners of Nassau County on Monday elected Commissioner McCullough as chair for the 2026 term and confirmed Commissioner Gray as vice chair, while approving a series of reappointments and committee assignments.
McCullough, who was nominated and seconded during the Tab A leadership elections, told colleagues he has “worked consistently to bring clarity, communication, and stability to our county,” and said he is “committed to leading Nassau in a way that elevates each commissioner and keeps Nassau County moving forward with unity, consistency, and purpose.” The nomination passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The board also approved a slate of county-board actions that included reappointments and term corrections on the Planning & Zoning Board and the reappointment of Dr. Cathy Burns to the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee for a term through Aug. 31, 2027. The board reappointed Deborah Babin, Loreen Pagel and Alyssa Myatt to the Nassau County Opioid Settlement Task Force through Dec. 31, 2026.
During a review of county boards the clerk and staff reported three current vacancies on the Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals and asked the board to authorize staff to solicit applications to fill those vacancies. Commissioner Gray moved to authorize solicitation of applications; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Commissioners also discussed appointments to the county canvassing board. The county attorney advised that the simple giving of money has not been found by ethics commissions to bar service on election boards, but active participation in a campaign could be disqualifying. After debate the board appointed Commissioner Farmer as the primary member to the canvassing board and deferred filling an alternate until the county attorney provides further guidance on restrictions and the possibility of a judge-appointed alternate.
On regional representation, the board reappointed members for seats on the Northeast Florida Regional Council, the Small County Coalition, the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization and the St. Mary’s River Management Committee. Commissioner McCullough said he recently secured a $30,000 WorkSource grant for CareerSource programming and asked to continue representing the county on that board; the board approved that appointment by voice vote.
There were no public speakers during the meeting’s public comment period. Commissioners closed the meeting with brief remarks, including condolences over the death of Baker County Commissioner James Bennett; Chair Houghton adjourned the session.
