Commissioner Israel urged the Parkland City Commission on Jan. 14 to put the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism on a future agenda, saying an adopted definition would provide "a standard baseline" for identifying antisemitic conduct and would help law enforcement pursue hate-crime remedies.
"The only way that we're gonna continue to move out of the quicksand we're in is by kind of moving away from the things that got us in there," Israel said, arguing that a standardized definition prevents disputes about what constitutes antisemitism and would aid enforcement of hate-crime laws. Israel asked for support from two commissioners to add the item to a future meeting agenda.
Commissioners discussed whether to hold an educational workshop before formal consideration; Mayor Rich Walker and others suggested a workshop could broaden the conversation and involve law enforcement. Vice Mayor Breyer and Commissioner Kanterman said they supported placing the item on an agenda and favored coordinating with Broward Sheriff's Office for practical enforcement guidance. Commissioner Murphy Salomonie expressed support but also requested education for the commission.
No ordinance or formal adoption took place at the Jan. 14 meeting. Mayor Walker noted the item had enough support to be placed on an agenda; commissioners discussed conducting a workshop or bringing the topic first to strategic planning to ensure the commission and staff are educated before any formal vote.
