Rice County approves procedural resolution to allow sale of jail annex; proceeds to federal government

The Rice County Board approved a resolution (25-056) on Dec. 23 to authorize the sale of county-owned property identified as the jail annex.
Sarah Fostad clarified for the record that the annex had been deeded to the county for a specific purpose and that the sale is largely procedural: the federal government ran the auction and will receive the proceeds upon closing. Fostad said the county functions as an intermediary to complete closing requirements, and that closing is scheduled for January.
"So just to be clear for the public, this was never really our building," Fostad said, noting the property will revert to the federal government and sale proceeds will not be retained by the county.
Commissioners approved the resolution by voice vote; no purchaser name or sale price was read into the record during the meeting. The resolution authorizes county staff to take the steps required to close the sale.
