Rice County approves local disaster abatements and credits for three house fires

County Assessor Joshua Schoen presented three local-option disaster abatements and credits for properties damaged by house fires. Schoen said the fires occurred in Webster Township, Northfield and Shieldsville Township (two in February and one in April). He explained state statute allows the board to grant tax relief when property is 50% or more destroyed and that abatements are prorated by months out of service when there is no emergency declaration.
Schoen told the board the abatements will apply to 2025 taxes and related credits will appear on 2026 tax rolls. One of the properties (Shieldsville Township) qualified as a homestead; one (Northfield) was a rental property and remains unoccupied; the Webster Township property had been purchased shortly before the fire and had not been homesteaded. Commissioners asked whether any of the properties were rentals; Schoen provided the ownership details from county records.
The board approved the abatements and credits by voice vote. Schoen also reported the annual clerical-error review produced no changes this year and the board accepted the report of zero corrections.
