Nassau County adopts local mitigation strategy; staff reports Community Rating System rating improved to 7

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners on Feb. 9 approved the county’s Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) and the unincorporated Nassau County LMS Annex for submission to the National Flood Insurance Program and the Community Rating System (CRS).
Director Cooper and county staff told commissioners the LMS is a planning document that identifies threats and risk assessments and lays out a process for mitigation and coordination; staff emphasized the LMS is not an implementation or funding plan. Director Cooper thanked the county and the town of Hilliard for a collaborative effort on the annex and said the county’s CRS rating has improved from prior years and is now reported as a 7, which staff said will help reduce flood‑insurance costs for county residents.
Commissioner Huffman moved to approve the LMS; the board adopted the strategy by voice vote.
Why it matters: Adoption of the LMS and a stronger CRS rating can lower Flood Insurance Program premiums for property owners over time and gives the county an updated framework to identify and prioritize mitigation actions. The document does not itself authorize projects or funding; implementation would require separate budget or grant decisions.
